Apatite Beads
Apatite is a transparent and clear gemstone, which comes in an array of shades like yellow, green, and blue. Yellow-green apatite is formed from a naturally occurring chemical concoction of phosphate, hydroxylapatite, fluoropatite, and bromapatite solutions. When you shop around for apatite beads you may be surprised to find different varieties with a wide range of color and textural consistences. One type, cat’s eye apatite, displays the cat's eye effect of optical reflectance that vaguely hints at the reflective property of an actual cat's eye seen at night time. Other apatite gemstones are unique for their transparent green color and striated patterns and are commonly dubbed “asparagus stones”.

A few specimens of a highly desirable deep aqua green form of apatite was discovered in Madagascar in 1995. This particular coloring has come to be known as electric blue, blue-green or neon “Paraiba” blue apatite, and it was found near Fort Dauphin, Tulear Province, off the African coast.

The Fort-Dauphin area of southeastern Madagascar is rich in titanium dioxide and many tonnes of the white substance is mined there every year. Pegmatites that contain aquamrine, and sapphires have been found here, as have tourmaline, beryl, garnets and spinel. Beautiful types of quartz are also found on this island, such as chrysoberyl, and labradorite. The source for the lovely electric blue apatite beads that can be purchased today, is at the Norcross-Madagascar Quarry which sits on a flood plain. This mine produces a wonderful middle blue stone and very pretty aqua colored crystals.

Historically, the name apatite comes from the Ancient Latin word “apatao” which meant “to deceive”. Why this stone means “to deceive” was highlighted in ancient texts; the gemstone, and the apatite gemstone beads made from it, was often confused with other stones such as tourmaline, periodot and beryl. Fortunately science, and specifically the advancement of gemologists, has put and end to this confusion and natural apatite beads can be purchased without “deception” and conveniently at wholesale volumes that allow for the best price to be had.

Apart from Madagascar, apatite has been found in Brazil, Mexico and Burma also. The Mexican stone is deep yellow-gold in color and it was mined successfully in the 1970's and 1980's in Mexico. This Mexican mining of the gem resulted in much yellow apatite on the market during those years. Brazilian gemstones on the other hand, are light aqua in color to a rich cobalt blue shade, while Asian stones are more likely to be found in the Cat's Eye Form, in light-to-dark yellow colors.
