Amethyst belongs to the quartz family. The color of this gem varies from lavender to dark purple. Not all the amethyst mines produce same color, the Brazilian variety is light pinkish purple to light purple, where as the African variety have dark color. Purple being a rich color made this stone popular among the elite and wealthy. Amethyst is known as the stone of spirituality and has many healing powers. Amethyst beads can be used as the birth stone of those born in the months of February and June. This gem is also the astrological stone of those born under the sun signs Virgo, Aquarius, Pisces and Capricorn. Amethyst exudes energy that brings about clarity of mind and thought; it destresses the body and brings about an ethereal calmness to the wearer. Amethyst is mined in Sri Lanka, Canada and East Africa.
