 PROPERTIES

Rose quartz beads are macrocrystalline quartz that’s usually found in granite. Like other quartzes, rose quartz originates in the Earth’s crust as a pluton, a mass of magma. This molten rock slowly pushes upward into the crust, sometimes intruding into veins and cavities in the existing rock. As the magma cools, crystals form.
Actual faceted crystals of rose quartz are quite rare and have only been found in Brazil. Usually, rose quartz is massive, meaning it occurs in lumps that have no particular shape. Why rose quartz doesn’t occur more often in crystals is considered a scientific mystery, as is the source of its distinctive color. For years it’s been thought that the pink color comes from trace amounts of titanium, manganese, and possibly colloidal gold in the quartz. But recent micro-analytical tests have shown that microscopic fibers of a mineral that has not yet been identified may cause the color in massive rose quartz.
Occasionally, rose quartz contains needles of the mineral rutile and will show a star effect (like star sapphire). It almost always needs to be cut and polished in order to see the star. The finest rose quartz comes from Madagascar, but in the United States it’s known as the state mineral of South Dakota, where it’s found in the Black Hills.
Whether it’s because it’s rarely transparent or because it’s rarely found in faceted crystals, rose quartz doesn’t have much ancient lore attached to it. What we do know is that it’s been used for centuries for carvings, religious objects, and ornamental pieces.
