Amazonite is a name for the blue-green gem variety of microcline feldspar. It’s found only in deposits of pegmatite, and its green color is thought to come from traces of lead and water in the stone. Although amazonite has the same mineral composition as moonstone, another alkali feldspar, its crystal structure is different. (Moonstone is monoclinic and Amazonite, triclinic.) Amazonite can range in shade from a pale blue to verdigris to a deep green. It often shows white streaks or patches, which are actually thin parallel layers of albite .
Amazonite, originally known as amazonstone, is named for the Amazon River, even though it’s never actually been found in the Amazon Basin. Because of the gem’s blue-green color, it was often confused with jade and turquoise, and one theory is that amazonstone got its name when it was mistaken for the jade that came from the Amazon region. A fairly soft stone, amazonite is usually cut as a cabochon. |
Astrology: December birthstone and connected with Virgo
Chakra: 4th (heart) and 5th (throat ; also soothes all chakras.
Metaphysically, amazonite is considered soothing stone that works on the nervous system as well as all of the chakras. It’s said to counter aggravation and negative energy, and to ease worries and fears. It’s also a stone know to open and re-energize the heart and throat chakras. It’s also said to be helpful in all communications that are about love.

Amazonite beads really do seem to hint of cooling tropical waters, and their soft colors are set off beautifully when combined with stones of other soft colors: pearls, rose quartz, pink and green tourmaline, pink and white coral, aquamarine, and opals. An interesting idea is to string amazonite with other opaque stones, all in blues and greens – jades, turquoise, lapis lazuli, blue chalcedony and, depending on the shade of the amazonite, possibly even chrysoprase. Amazonite can also be balanced by wood agate and others agates that have browns and tans in them, a combination that perfectly offsets khaki. For a bright contrast, string amazonite with carnelian, amber, and either sugilite or purple agate. |
