The preciousness of awesome emerald gemstone, which is the symbol of Venus, can be estimated from the esteemed written words 50 AD by Roman philosopher and historian Pliny as it says “Nothing greens greener” . Why Pliny uttered these universal words are no secret, as through these words he wanted to focus the attention of the whole world to notice the rich green color of emerald which reminds about the spring season. Emerald is such an illustrious stone, that its usage can be traced back from various encounters in the history. For example, emerald gemstone, whose mining started during 3000 BC around the Red Sea, was the favorite gemstone of Cleopatra.

Another noteworthy fact we gather from history is that one of the fabulous gemstone i.e. 300 year old Mogul Emerald, was possessed by Aurangzeb, the famous, Mogul Emperor of India. It weighs around 217.8 carats and is 10 cm tall. The stone contain prayers of Islam one side and other side floral carvings. Did you know that the emerald was sold for $2.2 million in an auction which took place in 2001? Even Shah Jahan, the Mogul King of India, who built famous wonder of the world, Taj Mahal, had also penchant for emeralds, which is why he inscribed this gemstone with sacred text. You can see all these Mogul emeralds even today in various museums.

No doubt emerald, which attained its name from Persia, come in different shapes and sizes including emerald beads, but large sizes pieces can be found in South America. Emerald in the past was also mined in Egypt and Afghanistan. Emerald’s usage in ancient Egypt can be traced back through historical facts as this gemstone was used for Mummies in ancient Egypt. Mummies in Egypt were often buried along with emerald beads and emerald gemstones on their necks as a symbolic gesture, so as to flourish greenness which is an icon of eternal youth.

Coming again on the inception of emerald, its mines located in Colombia have a similar history as that of Egypt. As soon as the Incas conquered Spaniards, they come to know about the existence of emeralds with Incas. But the Incas were adamant, even after their torture in the hands of Spaniards; they didn’t reveal the source of emerald. But later a mine in Chivor area in Colombia was discovered accidentally.
