Coral existence can be traced back since the pre-historic times. Historical facts indicate that coral gemstone was used for embellishment in pre-historic times. It inhibits light to dark tones of red and orange hue and sometime white. Historians have found this gemstone account in Greek and Roman mythology. Romans were of the opinion that coral had the power of protecting their children from any harm and it cures cuts too which accrue by snakes, lizards and scorpions bites.

Greeks’ usage of coral beads can be established after reading the legend of Perseus, the hero of Argos. After calcifying Cetus, the sea monster intimidating Andromeda, Perseus washed his hands after placing Medusa’s head on the riverbank. After having recovered her head, Perseus was that her blood had converted into the seaweed or reeds into red coral. The word Coral gemstone, thus recovered from the Greek word ‘Gorgeia’.

Historical facts also stress that one of the oldest coral which was used in coral jewelry was used around 3000 B.C. But it was the Romans who used this coral beads extensively and made it popular.
Ancients also believe that coral is the outcome of the deposits of small sea creatures which had been living in the deep sea waters. They also believed that coral emanated from the branches of underwater trees. Because of this belief coral has also been called ‘garden of the sea’. In principal, this gem contains three varieties, but of the three only one is popular i.e. the Corallium Rubrum or Corallium Nobile (red corals) has been considered precious stone. They got this name from another Greek word called Koralliom. However, the shine from these gems is achieved through polish.

In Indian Vedic Literature also, coral beads has considerable place and the stone is known with different names like pavlam, mangal and moonga. It is a part of Nine Planets. In Buddhist scriptures too coral beads has been mentioned as one of the seven precious treasured. Tibetan Lamas have been using coral bead rosaries from time immemorial. Famous historic personality Napoleon Bonaparte was also fond of coral jewelry. The famous Italian explorer, Marco Polo, too has mentioned about the use of coral gemstone, for decorating various idols in temples, when he was on various journeys. Coral gem was also popular during Victorian England era, as through this period coral jewelry of pink hue was most sought after and you could gauge this fact that during this type coral embedded with flowers particularly with roses, grotesque masks, chrysanthemums, fruit and leaves was trendy.
