  PROPERTIES
Quartz crystals that are part violet amethyst and part citrine—that show both the distinctive purple and golden colors—are called ametrine.  How natural ametrine formed is still considered a bit of a mystery by mineralogists. However it’s known that iron atoms have to enter the quartz in different states of oxidation (Fe4+ and Fe3+) and occur in different sites in the crystal in order to wind up with the distinctive colors that form ametrine.
Natural ametrine is quite rare and is the rarest form of quartz. Its major source is the Anahi Mine in the central Cordilleras of  Bolivia, where it’s believed that both amethyst and citrine crystallized simultaneously.   In fact, ametrine didn’t really become available to consumers until 1980 when Anahi began to sell their unusual crystals, and when it was first released, many mineralogists questioned whether or not it was naturally formed.  The Bolivian ametrine did indeed prove to be natural, and smaller deposits have since been found in India and Brazil. Ametrine can also be synthetically produced by irradiating or heating amethyst.
