African Opal Beads
Opals have long been a fascination to collectors, miners and stone cutting specialists because of the amazing iridescent “fire” that can be seen in quality stones. Opal mining has a fairly long history in Australia and many beautiful and varied kinds of opal have been found in the Southwestern United States as well. There are many varieties of opal mined today, including white, black and crystal varieties. Grey Opal, Jelly, Welo, Boulder and Sandstone Matrix Opal are other varieties that exhibit fantastic color, patterns and fire. Sometimes fossilized nuts and wood have turned to stone over countless millennia and an opal matrix in brilliant colors has formed within the cracks and crevices of these fossils, leading to fabulous patterns.

Now opals have been discovered in Africa too, and for the past few years have been successfully mined in Amhara Regional States. Approximately 2000 miners currently work in this endeavor and the opal rough is shipped to India where it is cut and polished to create faceted stones, smooth beads and small sculptural items. At the beginning of 2013, ten thousand kilograms of gemstones were exported from Ethiopia in the first couple of months of production alone. The Ethiopian Government intends to develop the skill of local craftsmen in the cutting and polishing of gems, so different cuts may soon be available from that country.

African opals that are fine gem quality are found with brilliant blue, green and red undulating flecks of fire. Green opal beads from Africa are a kind of opal known as common or potch opal. These interesting stones have a nice earthy green color and a spotted, wavy, and swirled texture. While other countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua all have opal deposits, 97% of the world's opal is mined in Australia. While common opal may not have that magical play of fire of its more precious cousins, it also doesn't have the same steep price-tag. Wonderful earthy necklaces, bracelets and earrings can be created with African opal beads interspersed with other great stones and beads. The intriguing green tones of African opals look especially fantastic next to silver beads, black onyx, and yellow faceted beads. Plus best of all, purchasing your opal beads wholesale, can lend further economy to beautiful jewelry and necklace designs.
